ABOUT ABOUT
  • HARLEM, HARLEM
“The spirit, the source, the sound, the singers - feel the fire, feel the music!”
    Conceived by Calvin Manson

Friday, Sept.  26 through October 12, 2014 - Ira Aldridge Repertory Players, in collaboration with SAN DIEGO CONTINUING EDUCATION, EDUCATIONAL CULTURAL COMPLEX, will open its 30th Theatre Season on a “hot note” with Harlem, Harlem, a musical revue reliving the music and the dances of the 1930’s, and featuring songs of numerous African-American artists who were popular during the Harlem Renaissance.

Harlem, Harlem originated at Educational Cultural Complex in 1984.  Created by Calvin Manson, it was first produced by the newly-founded African American theatre company, Ira Aldridge Repertory Players (IARP).  Harlem, Harlem played a limited successful run at The Marque Theatre.  Because of its successful run, IARP and Southeast Community Theatre collaborated to produce Harlem, Harlem at the Lyceum Theatre in 1997. This collaboration led to sold-out performances.

Set in a happening Harlem nightspot in the 1930’s, Harlem, Harlem celebrates the soul-stirring power, energy and enthusiasm of the Harlem Renaissance. This show captures the highs and the lows, the mood, the feelings and the powerful spirit of the Harlemnites.   Harlem, Harlem is uplifting, inspiring, and emotionally satisfying.  Music in the show includes that of Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Cab Calloway, and Louis Jordan.  Harlem, Harlem is designed to brighten your spirits and lift you out of your seat.

“Harlem, Harlem has historic values, cultural values and musical history.  It’s a full evening with something for everyone,” said Manson. “Harlem, Harlem is an important selection of IARP and reinforces the Player’s effort to keep African-American literature alive and present.  After 30 years, we are very proud to bring back this wonderful show on stage where it was originated.”

The artistic staff of Harlem, Harlem includes Director Calvin Manson, Founder and Artistic Director of IARP; Music Director Leon Alexander Matthews, Founder of the Leon Matthews Quintet;  Choreographer C. Anthony Cole, Founder and Artistic Director of C. Anthony Cole Dance Company; Costume Designer Pearli Killens and Stage Manager Jackie Clark.

IARP’s Players are Faatima Harley, Kimberly Jackson, Annie Lee, Rena Mitchell, Esther Anthony-Thomas, Wesley Thomas and Ronald Williams.
